NJAHS at the Oakland Museum

NJAHS folks: Come celebrate Lunar New Year at the Oakland Museum of California on
Sunday, January 30, 2005 at 11-4 p.m. $5 for Seniors, $8 for general admission.

Schedule of Events:

  • NJAHS Members Update from 11-12 at the Lecture Hall
  • Make copper friendship bracelets with metal artist Dawn Nakanishi at the crafts booth and check out jewelry booth by Leslie Yee Murata
  • Kagami Wari—mochi-pounding dance/demonstration at noon

Be sure to catch the short film screening about Nikkei identity at the Lecture Hall at 2 p.m. See "Hideko" by "Caught In Between: What to Call Home in Times of War" Filmmaker Lina Hoshino: Hideko Hoshino has had many names. The story, narrated by the filmmaker, places Hideko's life and name changes in the context of tumultuous Taiwanese history before and after World War II.

In addition, watch the Nisei Farmer which is filmmaker Dean Yamada's new DVD release. It pays tribute to his father and the reconciliation of his past. Both reveal what has been lost and what has survived. A Q&A discussion will follow.
