Oakland Museum Lunar New Year Event

January 18, 2004

After the Member’s Meeting, at 1:15 pm, as part of Lunar New Year Celebration at Oakland Museum of CA, NJAHS and Farallon Films will present a special screening of a documentary, Nikkei Style, by the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Okazaki. A discussion with the filmmaker will follow the screening. Free to the public.

A Taiko drum performance by Gen Taiko will follow the screening at 3:00 pm. (Lead by Sansei Melody Takata.)

Synopsis of Nikkei Style:

Nikkei Style, the latest documentary by Steven Okazaki, pays tribute to the Japanese American Community-its painful history, its rituals, and its quirks. Trying to “fill in some of the blanks” in his own family history, he explores what it means to be Japanese American—what has been lost, what has survived. As he journeys from California to Japan to Hawaii, he discovers a community that is still vital.
